What Day Is It? – Part 1

This is a question we have probably asked ourselves multiple times over the course of the past few weeks. By now, we have been in the same situation as the rest of the world for a good portion of the past two months. [In case you’re reading this in the year 2030 and you are not aware of what I’m saying, ask older folks around you about the year 2020 OR watch the movie Contagion…you will get the gist]

Many of us have lost consciousness of what day of the week it is. I remember my last official day at work as if it was yesterday. I blinked and March was over. I blinked again and we are in May. Everyday seems like the same because, for some, the daily routine is the same:

wake up, → freshen up → stay in bed or go to the nearest table → set up → start working for the day.

Now, there are some that do not have this as their reality because nothing has changed for them. They still wake up and go out to work because they need to (either because they are essential workers or because providing for their families requires them to be out working). My thanks, thoughts, and prayers are with you all.

Flashback to January 1, 2020 when we were all happy to crossover into another year. Who could have thought that a ravaging pandemic would shut the world down even before the first quarter of the year runs out? Even if we saw it coming (and some did – Coronavirus did not suddenly appear in March 2020), us the citizens could not have imagined this scenario. One in which all our plans have now been postponed or canceled. My heart goes out to two friends who have had to postpone their wedding ceremonies and to others who will not have their deserved graduation ceremonies after all the time they spent in school.

This pandemic has got us stuck and in fear as we try to go about our daily activities with the hope of not being infected. So, it is perfectly normal to feel lost and unaware of what day it is. Frankly, that is the least of our worries. We all want to make it out of this in peace and in one piece – that is the prayer.

In spite of what is going on around us, we still need to be thankful to be alive. As we know, many have not been able to make it. Even before the pandemic, people were losing their lives left and right. The fact that there is no known cure at the moment increases the fear that some of us have – I know it does for me. But as I said above we should be thankful to be here. I don’t know about you, but I once felt a way because it seemed as if I lost myself in what appeared to be the “sameness” of everyday. I could not tell the difference between the previous day and the next day. Weekdays sped past and weekends did not have the same allure as they used to, since I could not look forward to doing anything outside the home. Everything was bland to me and I began to feel guilty. If you have experienced something like this, I’ll advise you to throw away the guilt and cultivate the act of thanksgiving. Don’t stew in that state of guilt for too long. The longer you stay there, the more you deny yourself the opportunity to be productive.

Until we finally get a better hold of everything that is going on around us and we return to whatever the normal will be, continue to stay safe and healthy. Please adhere to the rules of social distancing, if you need to be in a group.

Watch out for Part 2!
